Java: Coming Soon to a TV Near You
(Industry Panel)

Moderator: Jim Mitchell, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Description: Interactive TV applications for set-top boxes.

Abstract: Java's fame in the Internet is coming to television too. Set top boxes and digital televisions are incorporating Java because it is a content type on the Web. But Java is also being used to *implement* the software in set top boxes, digital televisions, and the servers that provide the infrastructure for TV-based Web access. Learn how Java will dramatically enhance the TV experience and how it will bring Web-based applications to homes worldwide.

Effortless Updates

Speaker: Arthur Van Hoff, Marimba, Inc.

Abstract: A discussion on the differences between push and pull technologies.

Abstract: Applets are an enormous breakthrough in terms of software distribution. For the first time it is possible to distribute software to a wide variety of platforms without the hassle of manual downloads, installation, execution, and updates. However, applets don't solve all problems of software distribution, and applets do not scale very well to large, media rich, or mission critical applications.

In this talk we will explore new solutions for software and data distribution over the Internet. We will see how this process can be automated and that it can scale to millions of users. We will also explore how software distribution will work on a variety of devices such as network computers, home computers, and portable devices. Automatic distribution will revolutionize the software industry and it will change the way we think about applications forever.
